Husband and wife designers Charles and Ray Eames, initially created this chic and extra-ordinary item of lounge set in 1956 as a gift for their very good friend and movie director Billy Wilder (‘some like it hot’, Sunset Blvd’). Ever since its release, the Eames lounge chair has developed into one of the most cool and pleasant pieces of furniture of all time.
Typically aren’t many who wouldn’t know this particular comfortable armchair, as it has made an appearance on the big screen countless instances in sitcoms such as, ‘Friends’ - as Joey and Chandlers’ center item armchairs, quite often identified in the program as being way too comfy to stand up away from and one of which is even provided with a identity (‘Rosita’). The Eames lounge chair has also appeared on ‘Frasier’, ‘House’, ITV’s lifestyle TV show ’60 minute makeover’ and films such as, ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Mad Men’.
Co-designer Charles, at the time reported he desired the lounge chair to ‘resemble the warmth, familiarity and comfort of a well used baseball mitt’ when his wife Ray, wanted the chair to feature a ‘comfortable and un-designy look’. You can easily view through the chair’s image that this is just what the completed design portrays. Its bucket seating style and design and raised reverse leaning position promptly implies luxuriousness and is similar to the baseball mitt appearance, combined with the glossy black Italian leather material seating and veneer grain surface finish comparable to both the material and shade of a baseball glove and oozing with relaxation.
This particular Eames inspired lounge chair also arrives complete with mirroring ottoman, which is sufficiently small not to clutter any sort of living room, dining or office area, but large enough for people of any height, to sit back and appreciate ultimate relaxation. The chair’s neutral colour selection including black, brown and white leather and different tones wood grain, allows the furniture piece to mix well with any kind of colour scheme or style. What really make the Eames lounge chair so special and rare, is its ability to present a high amount of both style and comfort, as demonstrated in the range of various screen appearances.
Like the majority of traditional items of home furniture the Eames lounge chair would be an investment for any customer, through it's ability to retain its style and luxurious comfort for years on end. Togther both chair and ottoman are hand assembled and designed with extraordinary attention to detail. The lounge chair’s cushions are also individually upholstered and replaceable and the back cushions also are interchangeable, allowing those who aren’t into the ‘leather look’ to change the seating to any material or colour of their choice. Continuing to tick all the boxes, the Eames lounge chair is also environmentally friendly, as more recently manufactured modules are created with a richly grained veneer known as ‘Santos Palisander’, rather than the original endangered Brazilian Rosewood.
Furthering the Eames collection’s high profile status, the New York Museum of Modern Art have installed the lounge chair set in their permanent collection describing the Eames furniture set as, ‘the most iconic of all modern chair sets’. The set can also be seen on a permanent display at the Art institute of Chicago. It is clear that purchasing the Eames Inspired Collection is like buying a piece of history, a talking piece for any house hold or office and most importantly of all, a piece of furniture offering magnificent style and laid back comfort. An absolute must have for people seeking luxury style, comfort and relaxation!
